VanceS: I've never explored Jordan on foot

VanceS: yeah, very rocky

RickRo: Most do camel or donkey or jeep trips. I prefer feet and bicycles.

VanceS: there is one place here we used to go caving

VanceS: where we'd rent donkeys to carry our gear

VanceS: though the FIRST time we hauled it all in

VanceS: one person carried only the rope

RickRo: once was enough, I bet

VanceS: after that it occurred to us to use donkeys

RickRo: did they come with a donkey guy?

VanceS: interesting life style these people lead

VanceS: yeah, we hired donkeys and a herd of herders

VanceS: we expressed interest

VanceS: they materialized

VanceS: we negotiated a price

VanceS: they wanted us to give them things the whole way

VanceS: they especially coveted our rope

VanceS: habil habil

RickRo: the bedu here do most of the work with animals. Rope?

VanceS: yeah, they tie bits of plastic rope together

VanceS: we had this fine caving line

BeeD joined the room.

VanceS: to encourage moderators

BeeD: to join the FLNW?

VanceS: to solicit sponsorship from TESOL IS chairs?

VanceS: jejej

BeeD: this would be a good thing

BeeD: because we do not know them

BeeD: and what we are doing is helpful at all levels

BeeD: well..at least most levels

VanceS: yes, but there's a logistical probem

BeeD: ?

VanceS: let me give you a url first

BeeD: all in Tesol is behind walls

VanceS: it's an odd organization

BeeD: yes

VanceS: are you going there?

VanceS: must be

BeeD: if I get my miles yes

RickRo: I'm also working on getting distance ed courses to IRaq

VanceS: your session on social tools coming up is superb

DennisOl: Congratulations, Bee. It will be a splendid presentation.

VanceS: incredible the way you work on it

DennisOl: Wow, Rick. I'm impressed.

VanceS: the bavardage with Rudolph is priceless

BeeD: lol

RickRo: where can I see a preview of your presentation, Bee?

BeeD: I have a lot of fun

DennisOl: Bavardage???

BeeD: but sometimes feel like strangling him

RickRo: bavardez?

RickRo: shukran

VanceS: fahamt?

RickRo: fahamt

VanceS: tayib

DennisOl: Ja ne panimaju . . . but I can guess from context.

VanceS: we just translated bavardez into Arabic and Rick got it

DennisOl: Yes, I figured that out.

RickRo: It's a small linguistic world....

VanceS: and we are linguists

RickRo: nods and wags his tongue

VanceS: paralinguists in the case of Rick

DennisOl: bavardez = babble, no?

RickRo: BTW, would y'all be willing to be reviewers on the Journal of Less
Commonly Taught Languages?

BeeD: chat

VanceS: yeah, shoot the bull

RickRo: paralinguists--Hahahahah!

DennisOl: Sounds fascinating.

DennisOl: hee hee hee

BeeD: clavardage in Canadian is text chat

DennisOl chuckles

BeeD: (from clavier)

VanceS: good one

RickRo: It really is. I am review an article about swahili and another from
Turkish

DennisOl: Interesting, Bee!

VanceS: I don't know if I'd feel qualified Rick

DennisOl: Tell us more about Swahili and Turkish.

VanceS: I'm kind of lost without technology

DennisOl: the article, that is

RickRo: Here is the contact-- Danko Sipka

RickRo: Editor, JLCTL

RickRo: Professor of Slavic Languages

RickRo: School of International Letters and Cultures

RickRo: Arizona State University

RickRo: Web: http://www.public.asu.edu/~dsipka

RickRo: Mail: Danko.Sipka@asu.edu

DennisOl: ASU? I used to teach there!

RickRo: You needn't speak the languages--just have a background in
linguistics. Danko was my Fulbright prof of Serbo-croatian back in 88

BeeD: oh...on mowi po polsku

RickRo: nam!

RickRo: bee voce fala polski?

BeeD: tak

RickRo: kako?

VanceS: no falo polski ni portuguesa

RitaZ joined the room.

RickRo: voce fala!

DennisOl: Yes, his ASU webpage says that he's a professor of Slavic
languages: PhD in Linguistics from U of Belgrade, doctorate in Psychology
from the Polish Academy of Sciences, M.A. in Russian from the U. of Poznan

VanceS: Hi Rita

BeeD: eu falo polones, portugues, frances e ingles

RickRo: Hi Rita!

DennisOl: Rita! Abrazos!

RitaZ hugs everybody hi

BeeD hugs Rita

RickRo: Que coisa, Bee!

VanceS: quadra lingual

BeeD: as vezes e um no linguistico total

RickRo: eu naci assim....

BeeD: understand italian, spanish and czech

DennisOl: But you have fluency of differing degrees in all those languages:
very impressive indeed!

RickRo: Danko is serious about needing reviewers. You can also let other
linguists you work with know about it.

RickRo: The articles are all about language teaching methodology, so nothing
new for us

DennisOl: Do you have a URL for Danko's "call," Rick?

DennisOl: Bee: You probably also understand Slovak and Rusyn, no?

RickRo: Impressionante, Bee! Eu portugues, frances, espanhol e depois
serbocroata, italiano, alemao, e um poquitito arabe

BeeD: well..not exactly understand but get the gist

RickRo: Dennis, I think he doesn't have it up yet. He just started as the
editor

DennisOl: Bee: You probably also understand Slovak and Rusyn, no?

DennisOl: Ah, I see, Rick.

RickRo: I can send you the call for reviewers in an email

DennisOl: I'm only a linguistic dilettante myself. I can hold my own in
Spanish and written Portuguese (listening skills are improving), i ja tozhe
panimaju "kitchen Russian" i Rusyn.

DennisOl: Yes, please do that, Rick.

DennisOl: dennis.oliver@cox.net

RickRo: Just sent it. Again, feel free to share with any colleagues/contacts
who want to be reviewers.

DennisOl: Bee: Because of Spanish, French, and Portuguese, you must also be
able to manage Catalán, too, right?

BeeD: I understand some of it - it sounds like Spanish with a Portuguese
accent

NelbaQ joined the room.

BeeD: hi Nelba

DennisOl: Yes, it's very odd, isn't it?

NelbaQ: Hi, everybody!

DennisOl: How about Romanian?

RickRo: Hi!

DennisOl: Nelba! Abrazos!

RitaZ hugs Nelba

NelbaQ: Hola, Dennis! un abrazo!

DennisOl hugs Nelba as well

DennisOl: Mate gelado! Very interesting!

NelbaQ: I like mate gelado! the best drink in summer

NelbaQ: I used to have "tereré" when I used to study in the summer

DennisOl: Tereré?

NelbaQ: "tererè" is mate gelado in Paraguay.

VanceS: gelado is cold? or geletanous?

DennisOl: Ah, I see.

NelbaQ: instead of hot water

BeeD: cold

NelbaQ: you put ice in the water.

BeeD: with lime juice

DennisOl: Yum, yum!

NelbaQ: no, Vance it is very cold mate

NelbaQ: you can drink liters of it.

NelbaQ: it may be sth similar to your cold tea

NelbaQ: ready to celebrate Christmas?

NelbaQ: have you done all the shopping?

DennisOl: Mate gelado com limão espumante:

DennisOl: http://tinyurl.com/ynmu3e

VanceS: i love iCED tea with lemon and sugar

VanceS: mmmm

RitaZ: I ;doesnt like mate at all...., and cold mate..., hmm, still less

DennisOl: I love iced tea, too. We used to have it year-round when I lived
in Southern Ilinois.

DennisOl: The taste of mate is distinctive, I'll admit that, but I like it.

DennisOl: I still remember the taste even though I haven't had any for a
long, long time.

BeeD: we also drink a lot of agua de coco (green cocunut water)

DennisOl: Yum, yum!

SydnayA joined the room.

SydnayA left the room (signed off).

NelbaQ: how are you going to celebrate Christmas?

DennisOl: Online source for mate:

DennisOl: http://www.yerbamatecafe.biz/

DennisOl: Christmas will be low-key for me.

VanceS: any good sites for iced tea with lemon and sugar?

RitaZ: thanks, Eveready Dennis

DennisOl: hee hee hee

NelbaQ: low-key? what does it mean?

BeeD: at my parents, Polish way, on 24th when the first star comes out in
the sky, Nelba

DennisOl: relaxed / nothing special or elaborate

RitaZ: not very pompous, Nelba

NelbaQ: I'm staying home with the family. I love celebrating at home.

RickRo: I'm going to have a Brazilian Finnish Xmas

DennisOl: Will you have oplatky, Bee?

BeeD: Brazilian Finnish in JOrdania, Rick?

NelbaQ: let's take photos of us and Dennis can do one of those beautiful
blogs he does

RickRo: Raclette, sauna and Brazilian music and drinks

BeeD: Yes, Dennis - we will have oplatky which come from Poland

DennisOl: It would be wonderful, Nelba!

NelbaQ: yes, your blogs are always beautiful...

RickRo: We know a couple from Finland and Brazil --we'll spend the day with
them...

DennisOl: Wonderful! Do you have a (can't remember the name, exactly)
szapka?

RitaZ: wow, Rick, what a celebration!!

NelbaQ: so we can know each other a litle more

RickRo: knedliki!

BeeD: we have a cold buffet - no meat

VanceS: hmmm raclette .... cheese?

RickRo: I miss knedliki, though that is Czech, not polish...

DennisOl: Knedliki! Yum, yum!

DennisOl: Khvorost!

DennisOl: Varenniki!

RickRo: yes it's strange to think of cheese and raclette in the middle
east....

BeeD: just fish, seafood, salads, barszch with mushroom uszkas

RickRo: such a small world! Bee has a polish Xmas in Brazil!

RickRo: I met a lot of Ukrainians there....

DennisOl: Bee: Szopka

BeeD: no..do not have this

DennisOl: I know a lot about Ukrainian Christmas customs.

RitaZ: do you have that for Christmas only? what is knedliki? I love
varenikis! (I prepare them...;.))

BeeD: we listen to traditional X-mas carols in Polosh

DennisOl: Szopka:

DennisOl: http://www.polishamericancenter.org/Szopki.htm

RickRo: fresh fruit knedliki, Rita, are wonderful! They are dumplings...

DennisOl: The szopka shown above is VERY elaborate.

NelbaQ: We do not have any traditional food for Christmas...

DennisOl: Varenniki with plums: yum, yum!

RickRo: cherries!

NelbaQ: our ancestors were inmigrants... Spanish and italian.

RitaZ: would LOVE it, Rick!

DennisOl: Also yum, yum!

NelbaQ: so we have European traditions.

RickRo: shouldn't be any more difficult to make....

NelbaQ: But the weather is hot in Argentina! so now we are changing our food
for Chrismas

RitaZ: will look for the recipe (pl dont worry, Dennis...;-))

RitaZ: yeah..., so funny we eat as if in winter times for our Christmas
celebration

DennisOl: http://www.cooks.com/rec/search/0,1-0,knedliki,FF.html

NinaTL joined the room.

RickRo: http://recipes.chef2chef.net/recipe-archive/17/099468.shtml

RitaZ thanks dear Dennis once again..., so quick he is!!!

DennisOl: When I was highly involved with Rusyn communities, we had
something like Wigilia.

NinaTL yawns and hugs all the webheads

NelbaQ: yes, Dennis is always so helpful! :x

RitaZ hugs dear Nina!

NelbaQ: Hi, Nina. a bit sleepy?

NinaTL: Yes, I was going to come a bit earlier but I fell back to sleep!

NinaTL: Thanks for the funwall messages everybody

NinaTL: I have a question about that, if I am not interrupting

DennisOl: It was called Svjaty Večer (Holy Evening).

NelbaQ: I have to apologize about facebook...

DennisOl: It was a meatless meal with 12 courses.

NinaTL: Why, Nelba?

NelbaQ: I am a bit lazy ...

NinaTL: Meatless meals are what I like!

DennisOl: It included varenniki / perohy--usually several kinds (raisin,
mushroom, potatoes and cheese).

VanceS: Hi Nina

VanceS: what about Facebook

RitaZ: how do you feel about Facebook, btw? I feel its fun, but not to share
with students, maybe Im missing sth?

NinaTL: Dennis, if I had not eaten too much last mnight you would be making
me hungry.

NinaTL: Hi vance

DennisOl: Also mushroom soup, kutja (a dish made from grains and honey),
garlic, and more.

NinaTL: I always react (or not) on facebook, I don't do anything

VanceS: I like facebook with my family

RitaZ: and friends

VanceS: my son constantly tags photos for me

NinaTL: I understand kids these days communicate via facebook instead of
email but I don't know, it seems too open

NelbaQ: yes, I don´t find facebook very interesting...

NinaTL: Can't everybody see everything?

DennisOl: And after Svjatyj Večer, people go caroling—usually with a large
decorated star on a pole.

NinaTL: (not that email is private)

NelbaQ: yes, I agree with Vance and Rita

DennisOl: I still remember the koljadky (carols).

VanceS: I notice my students using facebook a lot

BeeD: Hello Nina

RitaZ: too light, very social tool

NinaTL hugs Bee

NinaTL: so nice to see you, Bee!

DennisOl: Bee, I think I forgot to give you a hug!

DennisOl: Um abraço grande!

NelbaQ: let's do a big hug altogether hahaha

RitaZ: Bee, I've seen you are attending TESOL in NYC..!

BeeD: wigilia is what it is called at home..and kolendy are the Xmas carols

NinaTL: When you post something on somebody's (fun)(super)wall, do you do
that one at a time or to your group of (selected) friends?

DennisOl: The Polish carols are very beautiful.

BeeD: well Rita, I have to add up my miles and see whether there is a seat
available on these dates

DennisOl: I imagine some of them are Pan-Slavic.

DennisOl: Is there one called "Heaven and Earth"? (Nebo i Zemlja)

NinaTL: I will certainly go because it is so close this year

RitaZ: Ive done that already, got one by chance

NinaTL: I will be delighted to hug Bee in person!

VanceS: when you install these third party softwares to your facebook
accounts are you concerned that any mal-use might come of it?

RitaZ: will then meet again, Nina! ;-))

NinaTL: I do worry, which is why I often don't do it

RitaZ: I am, Vance

NinaTL: Rita, don't tell me--are you coming to NY?

DennisOl: And I would be delighted as well, Nina, but I won't be going to
TESOL.

NinaTL :-( Dennis

VanceS: me too, which is why I ignore a lot of stuff in facebook

BeeD: http://www.leonkonieczny.com/MIDIs/Wsrod%20Nocney%20Ciszy.mid

RitaZ: yeah, Nina, and soo very sorry Dennis will not make it :-(

NelbaQ: yes, Vance. That is why I do not like facebook. You open many other
softs I don´t know...

VanceS: will not make it where?

DennisOl: to TESOL.

VanceS: me neitehr I don't think

NelbaQ: everybody is going to NY?

DennisOl: But I'll be there in spirit, and if you make another blog, I'll
keep up with what's happening.

RitaZ: we are very few so far :-((

NinaTL: Nelba, will you be there?

NelbaQ: I don´t know...

NelbaQ: I hope so.

NelbaQ: Who is going? Rita...Dennis?

NinaTL: It's early yet

NinaTL: Rita will you be presenting?

VanceS: I hope to meet some of you in Fukuoka

VanceS: sp??

NinaTL: Why Fukuoka?

VanceS: WorldCALL

DennisOl: Nelba: No, I won't be able to go.

NinaTL: I have 2 former students living there

NelbaQ: Are you going Vance?

DennisOl: I have my fingers crossed for you to be in Fukuoka, too, Rita.

VanceS: if my proposal is accepted

NelbaQ: Oh, pity, Dennis.

VanceS: it's at a good time

VanceS: my son might be in Korea

NelbaQ: who is going to Fukuoka?

RitaZ: dont know yet, have submitted a proposal for the EVO fairs, no news
yet, but wouldnt mind not being accepted, will go anyway :-)

NinaTL: So of us here now, Rita, Bee, and I are going to NY, and Vance and
nelba might go?

RitaZ: WorldCALL will be in Fukuoka

NinaTL: Fukuoka is definitely out of the question for me

NinaTL: Unfortunately my TESOL proposal was turned down :-(

RitaZ thanks dear friend Dennis for his concern

NinaTL: That is wonderful, Rita

NinaTL: Let's plan to stay together

NinaTL: Do you remember that Paula Emmert suggested that we all stay in some
sort of furnished apartment?

NelbaQ: when are you going to come to Argentina? :)

RitaZ: lets keep in contact, Nina :-)

NinaTL: Has anyone heard anything from her about that?

BeeD: oh..that would be nice NIna

RitaZ: I heard about that long ago

NinaTL: When I win the lottery, Nelba

NinaTL: Paula knew of a particular place

NinaTL: but I have no idea

NelbaQ: yes, pretty far. Isn´t it?

NinaTL: I should post to the list and ask her

NelbaQ: I am planning to organize an event here in La Plata.

NinaTL: Very far!!

RitaZ: yes, but once she said she had already booked her place, it was long
ago

VanceS listens to Nelba

RitaZ: La Plata, Nelba? with Webheads?

NelbaQ: don´t think with Webheads... I am planning to organize La Plata
BlogDAy

NinaTL: Paula said that, Rita? I didn't see it

RitaZ offers help

BeeD: this is interesting Nelba

NelbaQ: I was counting with you Rita :)

NelbaQ: we can do sth online, perhaps

BeeD: I have been participating in many blogcamps and barcamps..but they
have been mostly run by journalists

NelbaQ: wouldn´t it be great?

BeeD: not teachers

NelbaQ: yes, that is it, BEE! I want sth about teaching!

VanceS: it's an interesting idea

BeeD: I can send you a link to how to organize a blogcamp if you wish

NelbaQ: yes, great!

BeeD: have taken part in several

NinaTL left the room (signed off).

NelbaQ: I would like to do sth big, important.

RitaZ: Paula said that about 5-6 months ago, cant remember exactly, she had
already full house for her apart

NelbaQ: La Plata used to be (sorry, Rita) a very important cultural town.

BeeD: http://barcamp.org/BlogCamp

NelbaQ: it has a university and many intellectuals studied here.

RitaZ: I know, Nelba, and agree :-))

NinaTL joined the room.

NelbaQ: Rene Favaloro, the doctor who created bypass, was born and studied
here.

NelbaQ: have you ever heard of him?

NelbaQ: Ernesto Sábato, the writer, also studied here.

RitaZ: hubby is teasing me.., he asks whther any other Webhead apart from ME
will be joining the event in La Plata :-(

NelbaQ: well, Rita. Rosario is important too.

NelbaQ: I am a webhead too hahaha

NelbaQ: everybody will be invited.

RitaZ: c´mon..., dear Nelba, the second city in Argentina this is!!! ;-)

NinaTL: Is there a way to join it from afar? Then I might!

BeeD: http://beewebhead.net/2007/08/24/blogcamp-brazil/

BeeD: http://beewebhead.net/2007/05/25/barcamp-floripa/

NinaTL: How did blogcamp go, Bee?

BeeD: it was very interesting Nina

BeeD: it was not a teaching event

RitaZ: so what about a blogcamp? you have the experience, Bee, tell us about
it

BeeD: mostly social entrepreneurs, cultural agents, journalists

NinaTL: I have never heard of a blogcamp before! What have I been missing?

BeeD: read the 2nd link

DennisOl: I'd love to be part of the event in La Plata, Nelba and Rita.

RitaZ: (quite a job, Nina, to organize!!)

DennisOl: Bee: A blogcamp for teachers would be a splendid idea, no?

NelbaQ: yes, but I am recruiting people ;)

RitaZ: Vance, your adventurous spirit would like this...;-)

VanceS: yes, if webheads can help

VanceS: and worldbriges

VanceS: speaking of which

BeeD: it would be a very nice thing - but what I like about the camps is
that you have a mixed public - not necessarily teachers - this gives you a
better idea of what is happening in other fields

VanceS: worldbridges is holding a winter solcstice webcastathon at the
moment

VanceS: now here's an idea

NinaTL: summer solstice for some of the present group

BeeD -)

VanceS: I am asked to come online at 16:00 gmt this evening

VanceS: if anyone would ilke to skype in

VanceS: say to talk about blogcamp

VanceS: or whatever

VanceS: welcome

BeeD: Nelba?

DennisOl: Yes, the "mixed public" characteristic of camps is good, but there
could still be a focus on teaching.

NelbaQ: yes, I would like to join you.

NelbaQ: 16:00 gmt?

NelbaQ: at skype?

RitaZ: thats 1 pm for us, Nelba

NinaTL: 11:00 here

NelbaQ: mmm.... difficult time for me. lunch time...

BeeD: 14:00 here

DennisOl: 1600 GMT = 9:00 AM in Phoenix. I can be there, I think.

BeeD: what time is it now for you Dennis?

NelbaQ: pity :(

NinaTL: Dennis what are you doing out of bed at this ungodly hour???

DennisOl: 6:19 AM, Bee.

BeeD: jeez

RitaZ: yes, difficult time for an Argentinian Sunday meal :-(

NinaTL: 6:19? I thought you were 3 hours earlier not 2

NinaTL: 6:19 is not ungodly

DennisOl: I'm often up by 4:00 or 4:30 AM, Nina.

NinaTL: just early

VanceS: why not munch at the computer

NelbaQ: let's do it next Sunday

NinaTL: I hope you sleep well before that Dennis

NelbaQ: at this time

DennisOl: Well enough, Nina.

VanceS: yes, we can do that as well Nelba

DennisOl: Trivia for the day:

VanceS: that's a good idea

DennisOl: Most of Arizona does not change time: no daylight saving time.

VanceS: why don't you write the webheads list and tell people that this will
be a topic for that day

RitaZ: but anything is possible..., last minute decision, Vance, maybe we
turn up :-)

NinaTL: aha

VanceS: tonight Jeff Lebow just asked me to come on and talk

DennisOl: BUT the Navajo Nation (northern AZ, and also in some other states)
DOES observe DST.

NelbaQ: who is going to write the invitation? Bee?

DennisOl: AND the Hopi Nation (part of which is within the Navajo Nation)
does NOT observe DST.

NinaTL: Sorry I got lost. Which topic for which day?

NinaTL: Dennis, that is very confusing.

NelbaQ: blogcamp , next Sunday, Nina

DennisOl: Yes, I know it is, Nina.

NinaTL: Was that the day's trivia?

DennisOl: Yep.

NinaTL: Oh dear next Sunday

NinaTL: I will be driving a friend to the airport

VanceS: i never imagined that Dennis

BeeD: on January 6th at 21 GMT

VanceS . o O ( there must be a url for it somewhere )

BeeD: I will be giving a Blogstreams Salon session

VanceS: any plans for it bee?

RitaZ: what about, Bee?

VanceS: blogcamp obviously

BeeD: to talk a bit about the EVO sessions

BeeD: and the FLNW event

SvetlanaM joined the room.

VanceS: hello svetlana

SvetlanaM: Hello everyone. I'm late!

BeeD: It would be nice if some of the EVO moderators and coordinators could
join us

RitaZ: Hi, Svet

BeeD: Hi Svetlana

VanceS: you need only write and ask them Bee

DennisOl: Sveta! Privjet!

NinaTL: Hi Sveta!

VanceS: via webheads

DennisOl: Nina: Re the time situation in Arizona:

DennisOl: http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/usa/arizona/time.htm

BeeD: I have written

BeeD: but maybe will post it again

VanceS: where did you write? I would be happy to pass the wor

BeeD: on the EVO moderator list

BeeD: and to the WiA list

DennisOl: When is your Blogstreams Salon session, Bee? Month after month, I
plan to be there, but the time is often awkward for me.

VanceS: maybe i missed it

VanceS: ahh

BeeD: January 6th 21 GMT

VanceS: If I think of it I'll remind them

BeeD: It will be 8 am in Sydney

SvetlanaM left the room (signed off).

NinaTL: 2 pm in AZ

VanceS: it's in my calendar here
http://www.vancestevens.com/online_events.htm

BeeD: by then I should know more about the FLNW

NinaTL: why Sydney? Who is in Sydney?

BeeD: Michael is going to be in Bangkok

SvetlanaM joined the room.

DennisOl: January 6th: Epiphany / Theophany . . . AND Armenian Christmas
(except in Jerusalem, where it's held on January 6th on the Julian
Calendar--January 19th, Gregorian).

VanceS: I'm thinking to go to Bangkok

BeeD: are you? great

NinaTL: Jan 6: ton foton

NinaTL: (epiphany)

BeeD: I wish I could - but too expensive

BeeD: the money I received barely covered the flight to Sydney

VanceS: who covers these expenses bee?

BeeD: the flight was covered by the elearning07 conference keynote

DennisOl: Thanks for the date and time for BSS, Bee.

BeeD: and I will stay at people's places there

BeeD: but will have to cover my personal expenses

VanceS: is that aace?

BeeD: no

NelbaQ: what about your university?

NelbaQ: doesn´t it give you any support,Bee?

BeeD:
http://www.icvet.tafensw.edu.au/ezine/year_2007/dec/report_elearning07.htm

VanceS: in melbourne?

BeeD: I am not part of any place, Nelba. I am on my own

BeeD: in Sydney

NelbaQ: oh, I understood you belong to a school.

NelbaQ: but but if you are so hard working, there must be someone who can
help you with the expenses in Australia.

VanceS: do you know Sue Waters?

BeeD: I work for the Franco-Brazilian secondary school in Sao Paulo who does
not understand nor acknowledges my efforts in ICT

BeeD: so this year I am on a sabbatical

VanceS: isn't that odd

VanceS: I could say the same about my workplace

NelbaQ: Oh, it is the same story in Brazil!

DennisOl: "A prophet is always without honor in his/her own country."

BeeD: yes..I know her online

NinaTL: Nice to have a sabbatical though Bee!

VanceS: just noticed your elearning conf was a TAFE gig

VanceS: you might meet her then

RitaZ: "nadie es profeta en su tierra" in Spanish

BeeD: After 30 years in ELt and 24 at the French school, I thought I
deserved it

NinaTL: I am listening to Dennis' beautiful holiday greeting

DennisOl: How terribly ironic that you of all people are not recognized by
your school for your outstanding pioneering work in ICT, Bee. I'm absolutely
shocked!

NinaTL: Thank you, Dennis!

BeeD: Dennis---I am not French...just a local pariah

DennisOl: You're listening to the Lvovskij Gospodi Pomiluj, Nina?

NinaTL: Yes

DennisOl: I understand that attitude very well, Bee.

NinaTL: Very beautiful

BeeD: so whatever is not coming from the French gvt is not considered as
being of worth

NinaTL: I love Russian choirs

RitaZ: thats so good, Dennis, yes, thank you!!!

NelbaQ: Well, here in la Plata... after having insisted so much... I think
people are starting to pay me some attention.

DennisOl: But it's horribly ironic.

BeeD: I think this is a situation that mirrors other institutions around the
world

DennisOl: I'm glad you like it, Nina and Rita.

NinaTL: I am also enjoying the Notes (thank you)

BeeD: not only French but all over

RitaZ: definitely, Bee

NelbaQ: well, Rita. you cannot complain. You have a new CALL, don´t you?

DennisOl: Yes, I think so, too, Bee. That's why I said "I understand that
attitude very well."

DennisOl: I'm glad you like the notes, Nina.

RitaZ: ?? Nelba? lab you mean?

DennisOl: The custom of starring is very interesting, I think.

NinaTL: You have the soul of an educator, Dennis

DennisOl: I hope so, Nina.

RitaZ agrees with Nina

NinaTL: I always learn something from Dennis

NelbaQ: yes, rita

DennisOl: Oddly enough, I've had much more time to reflect on what
education, especially computer-mediated education, is now that I'm no longer
teaching.

RitaZ: but you are sharing your knowledge with all of us, Dennis :-)

DennisOl: It's actually connected to "a situation that mirrors other
institutions around the world," Bee.

NinaTL: That is understandable, Dennis We all realize that teaching does not
leave a lot of time for reflection

DennisOl: I worked for six years at an institution that emphasizes its
support for and focus on use of technology.

DennisOl: Yet this institution has a very narrow view of technology in
actual practice.

RitaZ: you were lucky, Dennis

DennisOl: Well, yes and no, Rita.

SvetlanaM: I know I'm interrupting here! I only dropped in really, to wish
you all Happy Holidays. I've learnt so much, so many interesting ideas that
get me thinking. See you next week. Thanks and Bye!

RitaZ: at least, thers recognition

DennisOl: The institution I worked for depends heavily on Blackboard as CMS.

NinaTL: Have a good week, Sveta, and a merry Christmas

DennisOl: Sveta: S Prazdnikom!

SvetlanaM: Cpacubo, Dennis

NelbaQ: Thank you, Sveta!

DennisOl: Do you celebrate Christmas on the 25th or January 7th?

BeeD: Ciao Svetlana

NelbaQ: merry Christmas for you too

BeeD: Merry Christmas

NelbaQ: 25rh

DennisOl: Nichigo, Sveta.

SvetlanaM left the room (signed off).

BeeD: 24th here (wigilia)

BeeD: 25th midnight in Brazil

NelbaQ: 24th is Christmas Eve... we have dinner with the family

DennisOl: I used to celebrate it on BOTH December 24th/25th and January
6th/7th.

VanceS: interesting

NinaTL: Life is short, so celebrate often

NelbaQ: and children wait till midnight for Santa's present

VanceS: my institute just purchased blackboard

NelbaQ: and then we go on celebrating on 25th

NelbaQ: what do you mean by blackboard? interactive board?

NinaTL: Will you be using BB then vance? I will use it for the first time
this coming semester

BeeD: 25th lunch but mother is doing it today because on 25th there will be
lots of traffic back to the city

DennisOl: January 7th = December 25th on the old (Julian) calendar (which
many Orthodox Christian groups use instead of the new (Gregorian) calendar.

NinaTL: BB = ELMS course management tool

DennisOl: Blackboard the course delivery system.

BeeD: so we are flexible and adapted our X-mas lunch

DennisOl: Makes sense, Bee.

BeeD: to local conditions :-)

VanceS: my institute which just purchased blackboard

VanceS: is likely to now want to phase out moodle

DennisOl: At home in Illinois, my family had a special December 24th
tradition.

VanceS: to force people to use what was purchased

NinaTL: It's too bad not to offer a choice

VanceS: bee and I were talking about this earlier

BeeD: a step backwards Vance

DennisOl: It wasn't Christmas Eve; instead, it was Dad's Birthday.

VanceS: with Moodel we construct our own courses

NinaTL: but you could continue with moodle if you want to, couldn't you?
since it is open-source?

VanceS: with BB the IT dept constructs the courses

NinaTL: lol Dennis

VanceS: from the registrars list

DennisOl: (We made it special for him because when he was a kid, his family
combined his birthday and Christmas.)

VanceS: yes we can nina

NinaTL: At UM we have to request space for a course in BB

NinaTL: I haven't done that yet

NinaTL: Since I teach f2f 5 days a week I don't have much use for the
delivery features

DennisOl: At one point where I worked, Vance, use of anything except
Blackboard was discouraged.

VanceS: yes, that will happen here

NinaTL: but I will try it for grades (Engrade experienced some growing pains
this semetser, which was frustrating)

NinaTL: and possible chat

VanceS: at teh American Uni of Sharja

DennisOl: Recently, however, there have been so many problems with BB that
other venues are now encouraged.

VanceS: they had exactly that dilemma

NinaTL: although I like doing chats here in my office

VanceS: so the teachers mounted their own Moodle

VanceS: and presented at conferences

NinaTL: I thought BB was supposed to be very dependable

VanceS: and kept mentioning how they were unsupported and discouraged

DennisOl: Yes, a number of teachers are using Moodle or something similar
now.

VanceS: from NOT using BB

NinaTL: Does it depend on one's own IT department?

DennisOl: It was dependable at one time, Nina.

NinaTL: It is new now, having merged with WebCT

DennisOl: No, apparently there are flaws within BB--maybe because of the
merger with WebCT.

NinaTL: I think it was modified after that, wasn't it?

DennisOl: Yes, probably.

NinaTL thinks maybe she should stick with Engrade

VanceS: its' the attitude you mentioned

NinaTL: Engrade has had some modifications and additions lately

DennisOl: Attitude, Vance???

NinaTL: The problem with Engrade is that I know people who have lost all
their grades when it crashed--it wasn't backed up

DennisOl: Can't you make your own backups?

NinaTL: If I remembered to download a spreadsheet every time I posted
grades, yes

DennisOl: Like saving files as a web archive or something?

DennisOl: Ah, I see.

VanceS: yes, the attitude whereby the admin decides top down what everyone
will use and how the courses witll form

VanceS: and thinks they are doing everyone a favor

BeeD: exactly

DennisOl: Ah, I see. Yes--a very common (and deadly) attitude.

NinaTL: I used to have a huge number of grades but this coming semester I
plan to cut back on grades

NinaTL: It's too time-consuming

NinaTL: I do like Engrade's calendar feature

NinaTL: for assignments

DennisOl: When in actuality, the admin is doing NO ONE a favor--certainly
not teachers and students.

NinaTL: and they have changed the look of it--more like an actual calendar
than a list

VanceS: the admin here made this purchase without seeking advice from the
lower echelons

DennisOl: Typical!

VanceS: or more accurately, after ignoring advice that was thrust up at it

DennisOl: Also typical!

NinaTL: At UM they solicited a lot of input but when BB and WebCT merged
that kind of made the decision, because those were the 2 platforms being
considered

DennisOl: "The users just don't understand all the factors we have to take
into account, so they can't appreciate why we make the decisions that we
do."

VanceS: what is that a quote from Dennis

NinaTL: I think that is dennis channeling univ administrators

DennisOl: from me--but it was a "reconstruction" of what I've heard from
admins

DennisOl: Yes, you were right, Nina.

DennisOl: Or should I call you Ninochka?

BeeD: I must go now...have a wonderful X-mas with your loved ones...I will
be sending news from Sydney soon :-)

RitaZ: nice meeting you all, as usual, folks, I need to leave. Enjoy your
Christmas, enjoy good company, good food, a good time...Bye, hugs to
everybody!!

VanceS: I don't mind being provided with blackboard

RickRo left the room (signed off).

BeeD: hugs

VanceS: actually it lnks wel to Moodle

VanceS hugs bee

BeeD: let's keep in touch Vance on FLNW

NinaTL: Happy holidays to all!

VanceS: lets do

NinaTL hugs Bee and Rita

VanceS: yes ho ho ho

BeeD waves and hugs

RitaZ hugs all bye

NelbaQ: Bye, people!

NelbaQ: love to all. See you next Sunday!

RitaZ left the room (signed off).

VanceS: blog camp is topic next sunday

NelbaQ: yep

NelbaQ: here or wiziq?

VanceS: but you can write and mention it please?

VanceS: as you like

VanceS: we always start here

VanceS: hang out here

BeeD left the room (signed off).

VanceS: but we can be elsewhere as well

NelbaQ: if you organize the meeting at wiziq, let me know, please

NelbaQ: I like wiziq better, we can see each other.

NinaTL still has no webcam

NelbaQ frowns

NinaTL is still in PJs so maybe no webcam is better

VanceS: would you like to set it up Nelba?

DennisOl: Yes, let us know if the presentation will be at WiZiQ, here, or
wherever.

VanceS: when you set the session you must determine then whether webcams
will be used or not

NelbaQ: no, I am not very familiar with it ....

NelbaQ: you start it Vance :)

VanceS: ok, np

DennisOl: I'm not in PJs, Ninochka, but my "at home clothes" are more like
PJs than "outside clothes."

NelbaQ: I will as soon as I get confident with it.

NelbaQ: I am at home clothes too, Dennis...

NelbaQ: hahaha

VanceS: you can get confident with it by trying it out

DennisOl: hee hee hee

NelbaQ: yes, I will.

NelbaQ: Oh, I have great news!

DennisOl: So you're going to set it up, Nelba?

VanceS: what's that

DennisOl: What's your great new?

DennisOl: news

NelbaQ: do you remember I am organizing a course for teachers in February?

DennisOl: Yes.

NelbaQ: yes,

NelbaQ: news

VanceS: on ... ?

NelbaQ: I got presents from Google for the teachers!

DennisOl: on (topic) or on (venue)

DennisOl: Wow! What kind of presents?

NelbaQ: gifts

VanceS: google gives presents?

DennisOl: por ejemplo

NelbaQ: don´t know yet. but the important thing is that Google is interested
in the event :)

DennisOl: Terrific!

VanceS: in what event?

NelbaQ: they must be t-shirts or pens... or folders

DennisOl: When will you publish details of the course?

NelbaQ: oh, Vance. you are not paying any attention to me :((

NinaTL: How did you find out that Google would provide goodies?

NinaTL: Vance is probably mutli-tasking

NinaTL: *multi

DennisOl: Is it connected with Google Teachers?

NelbaQ: I am very very sad Vance is not paying any attention to me :(

DennisOl: I like "mutli"!

DennisOl: (hee hee hee)

NinaTL: Wasn't Muttley the name of somebody's dog is some novel?

NinaTL: in some novel

DennisOl: I don't know . . . but it sounds familiar!

NelbaQ: well, people. I'd better go... see you next Sunday!

VanceS pays ATTENTION to Nelba

NelbaQ: have a wonderful Christmas time! I love you all

VanceS: hang on

NelbaQ: sorry?

DennisOl: Nina: Yep.

VanceS: what event, you said you were giving courses in February

DennisOl: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muttley

VanceS: but did not explain

NelbaQ: what..

NinaTL: I have to go also

VanceS :-)

NinaTL: but not before wishing you all happy holidays, if you have them

DennisOl: When and where will your course be, Nelbita?

NinaTL: and happy new year

NelbaQ: next February, Dennis

DennisOl: Yes, but where.

DennisOl: Have you published details?

VanceS: and from courses in February we got to gifts from Google

NelbaQ: I am insisting on using ICTs where I work

NinaTL: If I don't make it next week because of my airport run I will see
you all in 2008

VanceS waves to Nina and hugs her a big happy holiday season

DennisOl: Have a great rest-of-2007, Ninochka!

NinaTL hugs Vance, Dennis and Nelba and gracefully exits

NinaTL left the room (signed off).

NelbaQ: Bye!!!!

DennisOl hugs back

NelbaQ: abrazos y besos para todos-

NelbaQ left the room (signed off).

VanceS: ok, well I guess we'll find out what's going on in February later

VanceS: did you catch it Dennis?

DennisOl: W'all, podhuh, it's dis' yew and me.

VanceS: or what the google gifts were about?

DennisOl: No, I never did get it.

VanceS: haha

DennisOl: Actually, she doesn't know yet.

VanceS: oh

VanceS: I was just tagging bee's site

VanceS: the conference

DennisOl: I'll have to go to her "English Virtual Community" and see if
there's anything on the course there.

DennisOl: If you'll hold on a second, I can do that now.

VanceS: yes, I noticed you were posting on that list

DennisOl left the room (signed off).

DennisOl joined the room.

DennisOl: Hold on a minute more . . . .

VanceS: k

VanceS clings on ... maybe another 30 seconds ...

DennisOl: Nope. Nothing there.

VanceS :-)

DennisOl: Why does that NOT surprise me? ;-)

DennisOl: Oh, well . . . We'll hear about it eventually.

VanceS: Nelba is a character

VanceS: yeah

DennisOl: Definitely!

VanceS: she's cool

DennisOl: I think so, too!

VanceS: anyway I've got to run

VanceS: go get ready for my webcast

DennisOl: And she's a pioneer . . . and marches to the beat of her own
marimba player.

DennisOl: OK.

DennisOl: Hope to see you there.

VanceS: pop by if you are so inclinded

DennisOl: My best to Bobbi, OK?

VanceS: marches to the beat of her own marimba

VanceS: i like it

DennisOl: I'd love to!

VanceS: ok, 16:00 GMT

DennisOl: Or maybe it's the beat of her own kettledrum!

VanceS: it will be fun to have others there

DennisOl: Yep.

VanceS: ok, cya then

DennisOl: So . . . Hopefully, I'll see you there!

VanceS: take care

DennisOl: Bah-bah . . .

DennisOl: Yew tew.

VanceS left the room (signed off).
